Biotope

Boletus aureus is a thermophilic fungi. It can be found from June to October under oaks and hornbeams in lowlands, prefers calcareous soils. 

Macroscopic and microscopic features

Cap: usually dark brown to black-brown coloured with some parts paler and with red-brown to olive-brown spots. The surface is knobby, velvety. It is wide up to 15-20 cm.

Tubes: white to pale ochroid, pores are tiny and light.

Stipe: stout, ochroid-brown, reticle not signifacant (evident especially in upper part of stipe).

Context: white, without color change and significant taste, with a pleasant aroma.
